All About Braces

Getting braces is an important step toward a healthier, more confident smile. At Dr. B Smiles Orthodontics, we want every patient to feel informed and prepared for life with braces. Proper care, good hygiene habits, and following instructions closely will help keep your orthodontic treatment timeline on track.

Below is everything you need to know about caring for your braces and protecting your smile during treatment.

Brushing and Flossing With Braces

Keeping your teeth clean is more important than ever during orthodontic treatment. Braces create additional areas where food and plaque can collect, making brushing and flossing more challenging.

To maintain healthy teeth and gums:

  • Brush after every meal
  • Floss daily using orthodontic floss tools if needed
  • Pay special attention around brackets and wires

Patients who do not maintain proper oral hygiene may require more frequent professional cleanings. Adults with a history of gum disease should continue seeing their periodontist during treatment to support long-term oral health.

What Can You Eat With Braces?

One of the most common questions we hear is, What can I eat with braces?

For the first day or two after adjustments, stick to soft foods while your teeth adjust. As treatment continues, you will be able to enjoy many normal foods, but it is important to protect your braces from damage.

Foods to Avoid

To prevent broken brackets or bent wires, avoid:

  • Chewy foods such as bagels, hard rolls, and licorice
  • Crunchy foods such as popcorn and ice
  • Sticky foods such as caramel and gum
  • Hard foods such as nuts and hard candy
  • Foods you must bite into, such as whole apples, corn on the cob, or raw carrots

Also avoid chewing on hard objects like pens, pencils, or fingernails. Damaged braces can lengthen treatment time and may require additional appointments.

General Soreness After Getting Braces

It is normal to experience some soreness after braces are placed or adjusted. Teeth may feel tender when biting for three to five days.

You may:

  • Take Tylenol or your usual headache medication
  • Eat soft foods during this period
  • Use orthodontic wax to reduce irritation

Lips, cheeks, and tongue may also feel irritated for one to two weeks as they adjust. Orthodontic wax can be placed over brackets to ease discomfort.

Is It Normal for Teeth to Feel Loose?

Yes. Teeth may feel slightly loose during treatment, and this is completely normal.

Teeth must loosen slightly in order to move into their corrected positions. Once treatment is complete, they will firm up again in their new alignment. This process is part of how braces successfully straighten teeth.

What If a Wire or Band Comes Loose?

Occasionally, a wire or band may loosen. While this can feel concerning, it is usually not an emergency.

If a wire is sticking out and causing irritation:

  • Gently push it back using the eraser end of a pencil
  • Use orthodontic wax to cover the area
  • Place a wet cotton over the wire if needed

If irritation continues, contact our office to schedule an appointment so we can properly adjust or repair the appliance.

Why Is Wearing Rubber Bands Important?

Rubber bands play an essential role in correcting bite alignment and jaw positioning. For treatment to progress as planned, patients must wear rubber bands exactly as prescribed.

Not wearing rubber bands consistently can:

  • Delay progress
  • Extend your orthodontic treatment timeline
  • Impact final results

Successful orthodontic care is a team effort between you and your orthodontist.

Playing Sports With Braces

If you participate in athletics, it is important to let us know. A protective mouthguard will be provided for contact sports to protect your teeth and braces from injury.

Wearing a mouthguard helps prevent broken brackets and reduces the risk of dental trauma.
